Mandheling
Mandheling coffee (Kopi Mandailing) is Arabica coffee originating from the Mandailing area, Bukit Barisan Mountains, North Sumatra. This coffee has a good viscosity, medium acidity, floral taste with a sweet finish. In William H. Ukers’ book (New York, 1922), Mandailing coffee is described as the best and most expensive coffee on the international market.
Description
In 1833 the Dutch Colonials entered the Mandailing area through the Port of Natal, Natal, Mandailing Natal, the coffee economy began in 1835. The Dutch Colonials imported coffee seeds from Java by the NHM company owned by King Willem 1 and carried out nurseries in Tano Bato, South Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal in 1840 Through the Forced Planting system, the seeds were then distributed to Mandailing areas such as Pakantan, Mandailing Natal and the Angkola area. In 1848 there were 2,800,000 coffee beans recorded with coffee bean production of 9.3 tons. The coffee products were collected in a Dutch warehouse in Tano Bato, then taken to the port of Natal by land via Tapus, Lingga Bayu, Mandailing Natal. In transportation, the Dutch Colonials took advantage of the native people by carrying them from Tanobato to Natal Harbor which took 15 days round trip. In 1886, the coffee transportation route was diverted from Natal Harbor to Sibolga Harbor.
